Russia’s invasion of Ukraine indicates that these are dangerous times and cyber criminal activity thrives in the act of war. U.S. security experts have warned that any cyber attacks on Russia could prompt digital retaliation by either Moscow or sympathetic criminal hackers. One such group of sympathizers, known as Conti, is a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) group that allows affiliates to rent access to its infrastructure to launch ransomware attacks. Experts say Conti is based in Russia and may have ties to Russian intelligence.

Most American companies would not be a target of cyber attacks sponsored directly by the Russian government. A more likely and direct threat to our companies would be from the sympathizer, or patriotic hackers.  These hackers will be much more indiscriminate in their attacks, as their goal is largely to sow the seeds of chaos in the form of ransomware attacks, data destruction and denial of service attacks that utilize their botnets.

What Is a Botnet?

A botnet is a network of compromised computers that are communicating back to a command and control server, waiting for a command. It’s also important to note that many of these Russian sympathizing hackers are part of different organized crime organizations, many of which are run by the Russian oligarchs targeted by the recent sanctions issued by the U.S. government.  The overarching goal of these cyber criminals will be to use ransomware to accrue as much cryptocurrency as possible to circumvent these sanctions.

Can My Business Become a Target of Ransomware Attacks?

Unfortunately, small to medium-sized businesses are often the target of these ransomware attacks that cause unauthorized access to networks and data and disruption of operations. Increasingly, ransomware attacks are also including disclosure of stolen data to the public, according to a report from Crowd Strike. Data leaks related to ransomware surged 82 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year, the report found.
