If your business is still running some Microsoft 2010 software, the end is here. Microsoft will no longer support Office 2010 as of October 13, 2020 and is ending support for SharePoint 2010 and Project Server 2010 after April 13, 2021. But don’t panic.
You’re Not Alone
Business leaders are sometimes surprised to hear that their network is running 10-year-old software. But it’s really not uncommon. Sometimes it’s a matter of budget (upgrades do cost money) and other times it’s because one critical piece of software or equipment didn’t meet the requirements for the upgrade. “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” gets in the way, especially if decision makers are not comfortable with technology.
What Does the End of Support Mean?
When companies end support of older products, as Microsoft is doing with its 2010 Office, SharePoint and Project Server, it means the user (you) can no longer:
- Download the programs from the Microsoft website
- Download updates that include bug fixes and security patches
- Call, email or chat with Microsoft support for these products
- Access support documentation
Of all these, the fact that updates stop is the most concerning. Continuing to run programs that are not updated with the latest security patches will leave your network vulnerable to malware, including viruses, spyware and ransomware attacks. It only takes one machine to be running an unsupported program to put your entire network at risk.
How to Lower Your Risk
If you don’t already have a plan in place to upgrade your Office 2010, fast track one today. Every day after October 13, 2020 that you are running this software, you are at risk. You have a little more time for SharePoint and Project Server, but don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security. It’s far better to plan for a smooth transition on your timetable, in advance of the April 13, 2021 deadline.
