Computer and Network Security for Gamers

We all know that computer and network security is a critical consideration in the growing world of technology, but did you know that something as innocent as online gaming could put your cybersecurity at risk?

For too long, business and personal cybersecurity concerns have taken precedence over the gaming community. News headlines often focus on cyber attacks targeting large corporations and personal attacks such as phishing, smishing and vishing, while attacks on gamers have been overlooked.

The truth is, online gamers are not immune to cyber and network security threats, in fact, their hobby can make them especially susceptible.

Not only are gamers at risk, but especially young gamers. Video games such as Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnight have seen a significant rise in cyber criminals. Kids and young teenagers are easy targets, and they often play games on their parents’ devices, which hold information that is of interest to these hackers.

Let’s discuss why cyber attacks in the video gaming community have been on the rise, along with some ways to ensure computer and network security for gamers.

Increased Popularity in Gaming

The gaming industry has been on the rise, gaining popularity among adults, teenagers and even children around the world. Video games have become more complex, making it seem that they are also becoming more secure. This perception doesn’t mean you are safe though. Unfortunately, cybercriminals like to take advantage of opportunities, and video games are a perfect target. Their tactics are always changing and improving as they keep up with the technology industry.

Hackers are using increasingly sophisticated techniques, making them able to steal sensitive information from unassuming gamers.

Understanding Motivations

Cybercriminals have many different motivations for attacks, so it is crucial to understand what they might be going after.

Stealing In-game Items

The most popular motivation is actually to steal in-game items. In many video games, there are items such as skins and weapons that are of high value.

Most of the time, hackers will target a gamer for their in-game items along with their credentials. Believe it or not, credentials and rare items have real-world value.

Ransom Attacks

Another common tactic is ransom attacks. Cybercriminals will hack into a targeted account and hold it for ransom. They often demand the ransom to be paid in cryptocurrency, which can be made untraceable.

Many victims of these attacks choose to pay the ransom, out of fear of losing the progress they have made during their hours of gaming.

Attacks on Gaming Platforms

Lastly, hackers have not only been targeting individual gamers, but they have also moved on to entire gaming platforms. Their main goal is to disrupt online gaming services.

Their tactic is to launch an attack called DDoS (distributed denial of service) blocking games from accessing the servers. These attacks can have some serious financial repercussions for gaming platforms.

Safety Tips for Computer and Network Security

Now that you know where your risk areas are, it’s time to learn how to protect yourself.

Strong Passwords

This might sound too simple to be true, but the easiest and most effective way to protect your gaming accounts is passwords.

Hackers are often able to access accounts simply because the passwords are easy to guess, which is why you need to be sure to use unique passwords with a variety of letters, numbers and special characters.

If you want extra padding, it is a good idea to periodically update and change your passwords as well.

Multi-Factor Identification

Another newly popular computer and network security measure is multi-factor identification. MFA is a powerful tool that can greatly increase your safety.

MFA allows users to access their accounts by verifying their identity by a secondary method such as a text message or email. This makes it so that even if your password gets hacked, the criminal might not be able to access your account.

Stay Updated

Lastly, it is important that you stay up to date. This means not only should you regularly update your software, but you also should stay informed about new cyber attack methods and potential risks. Always make sure you are aware of the best ways to manage your cybersecurity
